Hang Onto Possible Endings

When God Asks the Impossible

Have you heard the saying, “If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat?” Although not recorded in the book of Luke, the other gospels tell the story of Jesus asking Peter to push past fear, uncertainty, and most likely anxiety to do the impossible; walk on water.

Perhaps his earlier encounter with Jesus in his own boat prepared him for this future courage. After a long hard night of fishing with nothing to show for it, Jesus tells Peter to do what probably seemed illogical. With freshly cleaned nets, the fishing partners set out to try one more time.

I wonder what Jesus had been teaching the crowds before He gives this request. Perhaps it had to do with faith and trust because He was about to give Peter a little test.

Is God asking you to do something that defies logic?

Tithe when you don’t have enough money to pay your bills? Forgive when it’s been impossible to forget? Step out of your comfort zone and start a spiritual conversation?

Let’s pray to be like Peter; despite his doubt, he obeyed anyway.

Peter’s response to the miraculous catch challenges me. Peter sees past the physical into the spiritual.

Concerned more for his spiritual health than his physical wealth, he cries out, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”

What if we were more concerned with spiritual things than physical? How might our lives, our families, even our culture change? Might God usher in revival one heart at a time?

Jesus offered the disciples a new opportunity. A radical vision for their lives came in a different line of work; catching men. I am undone by their response, “they left everything and followed him.” v.11 Family, friends, and everything familiar became less important as Jesus took first place in their lives.

Does Jesus have first place in our lives?

When building God’s kingdom takes first place in our lives, He displays His power. Sins forgiven, bodies healed, and relationships restored. Luke 5 records the faith of four friends resulting in the miraculous healing of their paralytic friend. The crowds, “struck with astonishment began glorifying God” because of the amazing things they witnessed.

Want to have faith that brings healing to bodies and souls?

Me too. I believe the key is to prepare our hearts for “new wine” that Jesus wants to pour into our “wineskins”. We can’t be about business as usual. Our culture has shifted so far from biblical truth that it will take radical faith, hope, and love to show a watching world that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Let’s pray like never before as we prepare our hearts for Christmas.
