The Measure of Mercy

Whether you’re familiar with the gospel of Luke, or this is your first time to read through it, I imagine like me, you are challenged as we pray about it’s message. Like, when was the last time we asked God to show us if we are a hypocrite? Um, how about never?

Hypocrisy breaks fellowship with God and ruins our witness. How is it that we have been so deceived into thinking that what we do matters more than what we think? As I type, I can see the most glorious sunrise. A beautiful reminder that there is hope for the hypocrite in all of us.

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day didn’t take too kindly to His words. Feeling conviction made them angry. Ever happen to you? Me too. Instead of repenting, we build a case to justify our actions. God’s word leaves no room for justification of sin of any kind.

Judging Jesus for unlawful acts on the Sabbath, the Lord promptly put the Pharisees in their place.

Believer, shouldn’t we be prepared to be called out to?

When I first came to Christ I definitely desired Jesus to be my Savior. It was several years though, before I understood and surrendered my life to His Lordship. I realize there are lots of theological discussions that can be had on this topic but that isn’t the purpose of my post today. I share my experience only. Growing in faith and understanding of Scripture began my journey to surrender places in my life I desperately try to control.

Freedom is found is joyful surrender to God.

Even Jesus surrendered His will to the Father. Before choosing His disciples, He spent the night in prayer. Seeking wisdom and guidance for this epic decision, I imagine He also sought strength to deliver the Sermon on the Mount the next day.

Imagine the shock of hearing these words:

  • Blessed are the poor…woe to the rich
  • Blessed are the hungry…woe to the full
  • Blessed are those who mourn…woe to those who make merry
  • Blessed are the hated…woe to those who are popular

Jesus rocked the world of all who listened, and and I think He might just want to rock ours too.

How is it we so quickly spot hypocrisy in others, yet deny it in ourselves? Why is it easier to look at the “speck” in someone else’s eye, yet fail to pull out the “log” in our own?

Doing to others as you would have them do to you is easier said than done, isn’t it?

Jesus said out of the overflow of our hearts, our mouths will speak. So….what are we filling our heart with?

When we criticize others, don’t we condemn ourselves for lacking mercy? We cannot fulfill the words of Messiah unless we are filled with His grace and truth. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. v. 36 Mercy to…

  • love our enemies
  • lend without expecting anything in return
  • do good to those who hate us
  • bless those who curse us
  • pray for those for mistreat us
  • turn the other cheek
  • give to everyone who asks
  • not demand what has been taken from us

This is impossible without prayer.

But take heart friend, all things are possible with God.
