Hang Onto Possible Endings

Luke 3: Expectant Hope

Luke chapter three calls me to expectant hope. While John the Baptist was in the desert, the word of God came to him. God’s word could have come to Pilate, Herod, or Caiaphas who were the most powerful political and religious leaders in Palestine.

Instead, it came to John. An ordinary man living in the desert, wearing clothes made of camel’s hair, eating locusts and wild honey. Not your typical preacher trying to build a following or a name for himself.

Ever feel like you’re living in a desert? Broken relationships, health challenges, and financial hardships can drain our spiritual reserves. Parenting problems, messy marriages and politics can create a deep thirst in our souls.

The Good News of the gospel is our weary souls don’t have to dry up in bitter frustration or resentment because life isn’t what we hoped it would be. Jesus says He is Living Water.

The prophet Isaiah tells us to forget what has happened before. He invites us to come to God with eager expectation.

“See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

The people were waiting expectantly and wondering if John might be the Messiah. When Jesus came to be baptized, they got their answer.

“The Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased.” Luke 3:22

This Christmas, come to the waters of hope as you focus on truth. What new thing might God want to do in your life? Increase your faith to believe for a miraculous reconciliation? Empower your trust in His ability to provide for a balanced budget? Comfort you in grief and infuse you with fresh hope to expect to see God’s goodness despite pain and sorrow?

“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” Revelation 22:17
