Hang Onto Possible Endings

Parents Need Hope

Abba Father, You invite us to call you Daddy. Thank you for entering into a personal, unconditional loving relationship with us through Jesus. You are the perfect parent and yet Your children are far from perfect. Help us to hang onto hope for raising our children.

Please forgive us when we leave You out of our parenting; striving to be good parents without coming to You for help. Please forgive our self-sufficiency and pride in thinking we don’t need guidance, intervention, or Your word to guide us into truth for teaching and training our children.

Thank you for giving our children to us. We acknowledge them as a blessing from You because You desire a godly heritage to continue in our land. We only have 936 weeks to raise them; help us to use these weeks wisely.

Many of our churches are closed due to the pandemic. We pray for families to gather in their homes or small groups to continue worshipping and praising You. Guide fathers to be the spiritual leaders in their homes and provide family devotions. Empower single moms to take on this role. Keep families faithfully watching online church, praying, and having spiritual discussions throughout their day’s activities.

May we be faithful to follow your command in Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Father, Many parents are exhausted and worn out. There is too much to do and not enough hours in the day. Some are dealing with anxiety or depression. Others are overworked. Most are dealing with altered lifestyles due to the coronavirus.

Lord, have mercy and help parents begin to enjoy their children again.

Give them energy and determination to spend intentional time with their children, teaching, training, and enjoying life together. Give them creative ways to talk about You, Your goodness, greatness, grace, and love.

In this time of high stress, please return the joy of parenting to your people.

Please help parents find strength from Your word to persevere in raising godly children. Lead them to helpful resources to find solutions to discipline issues. Please give our children a teachable spirit and stamina to parents to be consistent.

Father, many parents are also taking on the role of teacher. Help them navigate this new territory with Your grace, patience, and love. Grant them humility to ask for help when needed and keep a positive outlook to guide their children through school during this pandemic.

May parents grow through this trial and find new solutions to learning issues. Give children a desire to learn and parents a desire to come alongside, especially when children are discouraged.

Discipline issues can wreak havoc in our homes.

We ask for teachable spirits and a desire for children to obey so that they can follow Your command in Ephesians 6:1-3:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—  “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Please protect children from abuse when parents can no longer discipline in love. Emotional abuse can be just as damaging to tender spirits as physical abuse is to bodies. We ask for your mercy to cover families who may be in crisis so they can receive the support and help they need.

Protect children from adult problems. Convict parents of anger issues, abuse, or addictions that are damaging their home life. Guide them to find the help they need to provide a secure, loving environment for their children.

We pray that the next administration will make policies that support families the way that You designed them to function. Lord, please protect our nation against any legislation, movement, or cancel culture that wants to destroy Your design.

We bring these requests to You, because You are our Perfect Parent,

amen.
